Diamonds are often called colorless or white, this same variety of diamond is found in nature and incorporated in jewellery most often. Besides white diamonds, yellow, brown, green, gray, and black diamonds also occur in nature; they are called: natural fancy colour diamonds.
Natural coloured diamonds are a rare find and as a result they are high in value. When coloured diamonds are found in nature, often the quality of the stone is insufficient for use in jewellery. The process by which a diamond obtains its colour is unique for each colour. In the text below you will find an explanation on the origin of different colours in diamonds.
Of the coloured diamonds, the yellow diamond is found most often. The stone derives its colour from nitrogen, which is compressed during the initial formation of the crystalline structure of the diamond. The intensity of the colour depends on the amount of nitrogen compressed. The more intense its colour, the rarer and fancier the colour diamond.
Brown diamonds are not the result of additional elements incorporated into the crystalline structure. Instead the brown colour results from a difference in the crystalline structure itself. This crystalline structure consists of carbon and results in what we regard as the diamond.
While a crystalline structure is ordered, small irregularities may occur, these irregularities lead to spectacular results. The brown diamond for example results from these irregularities in the crystalline structure of the diamond. In this case the irregularities do not affect the toughness of the diamond which can still be incorporated into jewellery. Because of its fancy colour, the stone will probably have a higher value than the ordinary white diamond. Differently sized or located irregularities lead to diamonds of varying shades and intensities.
Pink diamonds are created in the same way as brown diamonds. As a result of irregularities in crystalline structures pink diamonds may appear. Pink diamonds resulting from naturally occurring irregularities in crystalline structure are extremely rare, natural occurrences of pink diamonds are even more scarce than deposits of brown diamond. Even when pink diamond occurs, the quality is often insufficient for use in jewellery. This is why a high-quality pink diamond will cost a hefty sum.
Blue colour diamonds are the rarest of all fancy colour diamonds. The blue colour results from incorporation of the element boron into the diamond in a way similar to how nitrogen inside the yellow diamond gives it its colour. Sadly it is impossible to find natural bright blue diamonds. However, being able to carry around a diamond as precious and rare as the blue diamond is a worthwhile privilege.
Black diamonds are actually diamonds that appear black as a result of the incorporation of many elements. In this case impurities that normally would not be appreciated have become a desirable quality. Black diamonds are unique and possess a beautifully intense black colour and sheen.
